The issue is that the radical wing of the abolitionists (who werent sane nationalists like the moderate abolitionist, but rather an insane Puritan Sect who were basically proto-commies) ended up gaining all the power with the assassination of Lincoln. Had Lincoln actually sent them back, the North probably would have been justified with all the war-crimes they committed, but instead they spent more time punishing the South (which they had already burned to the ground) and creating Constitutional Amendments that would go on to cause problems.

Yeah, if not for that the proto-communists of the GOP would never have been able to justify the multiculturalism that destroyed the US.

"Sending them back" would have been expensive and time consuming, not really a viable option imo. I'd be fine with allowing it for those who have the means to pay for the trip out of pocket or are able to get a job as a ship crewman but otherwise I think sterilization would be the most viable option, it would create a slow transition away from slavery(which undercuts the value of the white worker's labor) rather than an abrupt end, the nation would be of the blood it was meant for, the process would be relatively humane and the costs would be far lower than transatlantic shipping.
