So was Washington, and he left behind some interesting letters warning him of a then-new group called the Bavarian Illuminati that was taking over lodges in continental Europe. It's entirely possible the nature of Masons was a bit different when they created a country of their own and that subversion crept in later.

Regular Masonry is fine, when they become continental or global is when it is an issue.
