otoh, 1984 *was* a manual.

Eric "George Orwell" Blair was a British Government Propagandist and his wife was an Official Censor.

Huxley's "Brave New World" was a better predictor. Huxley was also a fan of Jacques Ellul. Why care? Ellul's "The Technological Society" was what Uncle Ted considered "his Bible".

Ellul is is considered the inspiration behind the Neo-Luddite movement, something people here could probably empathyze with.

it's one of my pet topics since I was introduced to Ellul - who is an ex-Marxist turned Christian when the scales were lifted from his eyes. It is a fascinating read and really changed my perspective. That itself was a little galling as I was on a Data Science Masters at the time.
