"Cowboys" were taught by "vaqueros" who herded cattle and horses for the Spanish. These vaqueros came from Spain. They descended from Roman cattle herders and horse riders. The English traditions are very different.

If you ever get the chance, spend some time with Tejanos who have lived in Texas since the 1800s. You'll see who cowboys really are. The rodeo is descended from the Roman times.

I'm not elevating the cowboy culture. Up until the 1950s "cowboy" meant scum degenerate loser who could only work at herding cows.
