See if there's a Linguaphone version for your language of choice. You can often find them used, the older the better. Or you can find more recent version piratable online.

Linguaphone is just the superior method, because it mixes listening, reading, translating, and speaking into the same lesson

It's an old British company that have been making language learning materials for decades. They're how I learned German. Their packs come with a few course books and tapes/cds/mp3s to learn a given language
