It's interesting to note that, as far back as the mid-2000s, Al-Quaeda's stated strategy was provoking the West to engage in costly, long term wars that would drain their finances and moral.

Why does Israel seemingly support this strategy?

As far back as the 70s, when they were armed by the CIA with the expressed goal of drawing Russia into a quagmire to drain their finances.
