Better yet, why would you number them if you’re just going to kill them?
I saw a comic of an exterminator doing that to roaches and the other guy was asking that question. I’ll have to find it again.

I mean to play devils advocate, the tattoo would help identify them if they escaped, though even then there would be ways of hiding it.

You wouldn't need a unique identifier in that case. And in an era when long sleeves are the norm, if you're gonna mark death camp prisoners to keep them from escaping, why not simply mark the face?
