In Makovsky’s canvas, a brother and sister are rushing home before a thunderstorm. The girl courageously carries her brother on her back across the shaky bridge. A thunderstorm is about to break out: the wind is whistling, the clouds are thickening. But a sunspot on the horizon gives hope. The children will get home and find the warmth and care of their mother.

The prototype of the picture was a girl whom Makovsky met in the village. The artist offered to draw her, but she did not show up for the meeting. Her brother later said that they were running from a thunderstorm. While crossing the bridge, his little sister slipped and fell into the swamp, after which she fell ill.

The artist painted the picture from memory, regretting that he could not show it to the heroine.
