There is a severe shortage of introspection in society. Most people do not take the time to think, question, cogitate -- they just consume narrative and get excited for more narrative.
A good exercise is to take a view that you hold, sit alone (or walk somewhere quiet) and play devil's advocate: pull it apart, interrogate it.
Unfortunately, pic is absolutely true. The majority of people just sleep walks, running on CurrentThing™ NPC programming.
