I get where they went wrong.
For millennia conservative as a concept didn't even exist, it was being socially normal. You weren't actively trying to go against the grain and disrupt societal norms.
"Conservative" is the "cis gender" of social concepts.
The problem is that when the world changed a century ago and it became clear that a sizable chunk of the population were actively trying to shift society in a bad direction, the normies (what became conservatives) had no clue what to do or how to do.
They'd never done anything, good or bad. They'd just *been*. It's like if you had always leisured in a pool and suddenly it became a river and you actually had to swim to prevent being carried away - merely standing in place was no longer enough.

It was almost 2 centuries ago, and it was never clear to normies that the new direction was bad, or even significant. Most of them just continued as if nothing was happening, allowing your proverbial river to carry them wherever it happened to be going.
There are many times and places in history where things have taken a bad turn. The Wilson era, the Obama Era, the LBJ era, WW1, WW2, the Reformation, the Avignon papacy, the Enlightenment, the French Revolution, etc. Every human empire has adopted changes that brought about its own decline. The greatest hubris of the Neoliberals is the belief that they solved politics even as they destroyed the prosperous society they inherited.
