I'm talking with a couple of adolescents today. The conversation is about foul language and is it acceptable or even sinful to use cuss words.

In the process of the conversation, one of the youths mentions their friend said "nigger" a few times the other day.

I simply chime in warning them that using that word in the presence of niggers will make them lose control and probably attack you. Especially if there is a group of them.

One of the kids pipes up and asks, "Why? That's what they are."

I tilted my head at his response which made him chime in further, "that's what they call themselves."

What an observant kid.

Being stupid is a virtue to stupid people. They embrace it and take pride in it. Waste and irresponsibility is a status symbol. While your grandpa might be proud of buying a Cadillac and keeping it looking like new for years, an idiot is proud that they can buy a Cadillac and crash it. Thus, among idiots, being called stupid is a compliment. However, even idiots know that a smart person is insulting them by calling them stupid, and they are deeply offended, not by the insult but, by the intent to diminish their status.
