Because under jewish law, the penalty for blasphemy (teaching judaism wrong) is death. But that wouldn't cut it for the Romans, who reserved the death penalty for themselves and used it only for heinous crimes like murder or inciting rebellion.

All human societies kill those who pose enough threat to their power scheme.
