Yes, north Africa was a center of learning and part of the European trade network. Until muslims took over and they started piracy and taking white salves that is.

Depends on where. Eastern North Africa yes. Western North Africa was mostly berber tribes (who were 100% white by the way) just more or less chilling and going about their life until arabized.
