Ukraine was granted independence by the German Empire as a result of the German victory over Russia in 1917. It was then occupied by Russian soldiers when Jews took power in Russia, but failed to take power in Ukraine.

Socialism, as I understand the definition, is when workers do a revolution to replace the current government with a new government that is supposed to enforce things like land distribution and/or worker owned workplaces.
