Still a waste of money. Pokemon cards "expire" every year, so they're no longer legal to use in tournaments. You have to buy the new cards from the new expansion if you want to play at organized events, which is how they keep their soyjacks spending money year over year. It's pathetic.
People are using the cards to play? So far it seems like the crypto bros and scalpers have jumped in because the rhetoric I have seen is they buy up what they can and sell what they can at an insane profit. The algorithm is skewing content to favor people pulling out favorable and expensive cards, fueling the hysteria.

christ, I contacted some family about 18 months ago after my sister died and it turns out they still have my MtG cards from 30 years ago and people are willing to pay hundreds of dollars for the ones which are still tournament legal
They also have all my systems. I kept boxes and manuals for everything in ziplock bags in boxes i the attic, all original packaging uncluding the inserts such as styrafoam
Most of them probably aren't worth shit anymore. WotC has been printing all sorts of new product for the modern format that has imploded the secondary market in the last few years. Unless you had legacy relevant cards, you probably would just have valueless bookmarks these days.
A lesson younger me could have stood to learn a long time ago. I haven't played magic for close to a decade now, but I shudder to think at the money I wasted on that game.

Nope. Nintendo has recently released these new pokemon card sets and people have been going ape shit over them.
All over my feed you see people go crazy for them.
Think of it like crypto but on paper, because there are cards that can go for as much as 18,000 dollars, and others that range 200+ and beyond. Since these packs are around 40 dollars, people see it as a get rich quick scheme as evidenced by the number of cards being sold on ebay for insanely high prices.
basically a ramped up old new box scheme from MtG when I was in college, but using new series and costing 10x as much
it's cryto, which if I still had that HDD I would have had my BitCoin Faucet wallet, but once the feds got a hold of it I didn't want anything to do with it, and now while I do have regrets about not having all of that fiat currency I know I made a decision to not engage ins behavtior destructive to White society
Oh, and the waifu cards
