They're (respectfully) cowards and heretics (or at least, compromisers with heretics) who will die off and be replaced by a Catholic youth that hates everything they've done and will tear it down and rebuild the Church they destroyed. The Lukewarmness (or frigid coldness, at this point) is part of a wider phenomenon that isnt just restricted to the Catholic Church where boomers and goyest gen clergy, regardless of sect or even religion (see the effete converts to buddhism) could care less about established dogma and tradition and instead demand that Religion bend to their emotions.
