It's not "hard" in the same way that falling off a bridge isn't hard.

You just see it all the time.

Death is your constant companion as a farmer.

You realize that animals don't care about death. It is just as natural as eating grass or breathing.

I've held plenty of animals in my arms and told them "If you want to live, I will nourish you and you will survive. If you want to die, that's your choice, but I refuse." They are dead in an hour or so. Lots of animals don't see a reason to struggle just to live. Death is natural. Death is good.

The animals often perk up moments before they die. They smile and comfort me, telling me it's OK, not to worry. Their pain will soon end. I have to continue.

My philosophy used to include death as an abstract concept. When my parents died, it became very real. Was he an enemy to be feared and challenged? Now death is my partner. When it is my time, I am more than ready. I have no regrets. I did everything I could with what I had. If I had to live my life again I don't think I would change anything. He is free to take any or all of my animals at any time.
