This "rich" person (Dan Pena) was so worried about what other people thought of him, he got down on his knees to count how many gift-wrapped "things" were under his tree... so he could gloat... as a measure of success.
Materialism is a life of unsatisfied hunger, spiritual bankruptcy and human relationships based on prideful and competitive vapid self worship.
A breathless need for approval from others because they don't know the spiritual peace of a fellowship with Jesus.
