Man, BJJ is some CatDog shit.
Striking arts make for much better spectator sports if you ask me, but grappling looks hard as fuck, and is debatably the best empty handed skill in a street fight scenario. Respect to both gentlemen.
I personally think wresting and judo is the best for unsanctioned self defense situations. What I mean is having and using clinches to avoid, the ground at all costs, and then get out of dodge and/or draw a weapon as you disengage. I always worry about a third party coming in to kick you in the face when on the ground. Another god thing is learning how to use headbutts, and elbows in the clinch in order not to break your fingers and hands. If I do end up on the ground, I’m biting and eye gouging in order to get them off of me quick so I can get back on my feet ASAP.

Could be. I'm definitely no martial arts buff, but my guess was on Muay Thai. They do a lot of that clinch work combined with every practical strike you could need, and they are notorious for developing brutally tough bodies. I've seen videos of those fuckers kicking a metal pipe out of shape with bare shins.
My back is too messed up for any of that stuff, so I train weapons. Cane for melee combat, or old reliable in the waistband depending on the situation.
Smart man. I train pattern recognition, and avoid like the plague. I’m not fighting anyone if I can absolutely avoid it. Like I said, I’m only getting physical just enough to gain enough space to draw a weapon. I don’t care how badass you are, people are fucking crazy, and shit on the street can go sideways really fast. I wouldn’t want some POS biting me, or getting their blood on me. Fuck that.
