I believe earth as we know it is some type of middle ground in between hell and heaven. We're trapped here until we die, and both good and evil exist. It's up to us to be good, but also notice and reject evil trying to prey on our generosity.
After all, heaven has a wall to keep the riff raff out. Old towns here on earth used to have walls protecting it from (((parasites))). Countries used to have borders. Both God and satan exist, although neither in physical form, but perhaps like energy, or a spirit (God) and a demon (satan) which clearly interfere with morale in this world.
