Yes, TIG and MIG have their places (I tigged some stainless for my dad's fireplace last year), but if you're dealing with less than ideal conditions and want shit made of iron to hold, nothing beats stick welding with 6011.

As an aside, don't underestimate the usefulness of working for a place that throws out useful materials.

Metal, wood, stone, there are all sorts of things you can scavenge. Bonus points if you're friends work at another place and you can swap materials.
