Nope. This price was chosen by an algorithm. Ending in an 8 means a first time price reduction, either for an overstock rollback at that location or the start of it going on clearance.
Yes. Someone who wasn't aware of the symbolism made a system where the rollback price of items originally priced a certain amount would end being $14.88. There is an entire system of final decimals and percent discount for rollback, in-store overstock, first, second, and third reduction, and clearance, and initial price is based on aqcuisition price for the regional distribution center. So at a certain price an item on rollback which ends in a final decimal of 8 - will be $14.88.
