Only children are a significant problem for any society. At least the only children are readily identifiable in a culture where everyone has 8-10 siblings in their family. But in a society like China where all children are only children, they don't realize the problem they have on their hands.

China is still extremely tribal. This is why Christianity is one of the three pillars of the west, it provided the moral framework that western societies built their culture on. China has never had that; there are no communal interests outside family. You can see it in the condition of condos there, all the communal areas are shit, but the condos themselves are nice, and well maintained.
