They had no horses; zebras are ill-suited for taming. Now I don't know if they could've tamed their version of water buffalo or some such. Their tribalism probably wouldn't have allowed it either way, they were ruled and are ruled over by retard-level kings and leaders who want to keep them as literal slaves.
The zebra thing is a myth. A few zebras have been tamed enough to use as minor labor over the last few decades, just to see if it was possible. All you need to do is breed the more docile ones and after a few generations you get domesticated zebras. This requires forethought and complex planning, though, and subsaharan Africans are typically deficient in both.
