40 years ago I used to take public transportation in Los Angeles to and from school. I was 10 years old. Now my parents would be arrested for daring to do something so negligent.

We've lost our country.

I can attest to similar attitudes when I was a kid. When I was in grades 3-5, I used to walk home from school. It was a several mile walk, and I did it alone, every day. It wasn't seen as abnormal.
