It's a compelling theory and I choose to believe it. The gut might as well be a secondary brain for how it affects unconscious behavior. It being infected with parasites that entice behavior that allows the spread through contact with filth would line up logically with what we know about the behavioral altering effects of other parasites, viruses, and fungi.
