>Revelation 12:3 And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads.
The seven heads are not physical things, they are spiritual oppression. The 10 horns are not physical things, the are spiritual powers, spiritual strengths. The seven crowns are bragging of victory over God's people, the church.
>Revelation 3:21 To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne.
Seven times in the seven churches the mandate to conquer is ordered by Jesus Christ. It is Babylon that is being conquered by the church that follows the Spirit of Christ.
>Revelation 8:13 For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.
14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
The sons of God conquer Babylon by following the Spirit of God. Babylon is simply the dragon, the beast, and the false prophet of Revelation 13 that decieves them that dwell on earth.
>Revelation 13:3 and all the world wondered after the beast.11 And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon.
12 And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast 14 And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth
The beast, the dragon, and the false prophet are all that is to be conquered by the Church. The beast, the dragon and the false prophet is that which deceives them that dwell on earth including the carnal minded Christian.
The church does conquer Babylon in the book of Revelation. The whole purpose of the book of Revelation is a conquering church.
>Revelation 15:2 And I saw as it were a sea of glass mingled with fire: and them that had gotten the victory over the beast, and over his image, and over his mark, and over the number of his name, stand on the sea of glass, having the harps of God.
Hence why:
>all the world wondered at the beast.
> causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast 14 And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth
Because the world was confused and amazed at the Vatican II but was deceived into believing it was the Catholic Church. John Paul II was “canonized” by the Vatican II, causing the world to worship him as a holy figure when he was actually in hell.

I think you can apply it the physical, but it is not a particular physical thing. So your whole Vatican thing is like however you are applying it. You don't have to be a historian to understand the book.
The church had been dragged into carnality by trying to interpret the book as part of past or future. The book is about the timeless realm God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit, and the kingdom where the conquering church abides.
