I remember reading a book about WW2 when I was in HS and the author made a comment along the lines of "armchair generals worry about strategy and tactics and real generals worry about logistics". Several years later I watched *Patton* for the first time and there was a scene where he was indignant that his progress was being hindered because he couldn't get enough gasoline.
If you look at post WWI Europe, what the Germans accomplished borders on a miracle. The U.S.'s (technically the western hemisphere's) advantage is that they were too far away to get bombed.
