A lot of this seems like older men who have spent their whole lives being respected for promulgating state-approved narratives and doctrine to their 'flock' (I'm using that term both seriously and ironically).
They've never faced the slightest resistance or skepticism toward their foundationless teachings, and they have no idea how to weather it now that it's arrived.
