Why does Wikipedia describe progressivism is the United States as a left wing political philosophy, then the entire history of the progressive movement is banning prostitution, prohibition, eugenics, voter registration laws, literacy tests before voting, disenfranchising black voters, and preservation of wildlife.

This is why:
Traditionally there were two classical forms of governance: Classical Conservatism and Classical Liberalism.
Conservationism is named after a philosophy of conserving traditional culture and values i.e. Christian culture and values.
Liberalism doesn't care about our traditional Christian culture and values.
This is why Western Liberalism dramatically changed over the past century: because it was easier for jews to subvert it, consume it from within like a cancer and wear it's desiccated skin as camouflage.

The reason why we didn't have so many laws back in the day is because we didn't need so many laws. If you were a good person, and there was a prostitute hanging out on your street, you would chase her off and kick the crap out of her pimp. If they persisted, you would shoot them and be done with it. If there was a gang, you would invoke *posse comitatus* and all the young men in the area would ride with you and blow the gang to kingdom come and you'd have a celebration afterwards.
Good people don't need any government. Bad people need to be governed by good people. When bad people get in power, good people should do the obvious thing, invoke *posse comitatus* and overthrow the evil people and put good people back in charge.
The "progressives" are "progressing" from freedom and liberty to tyrannical control of the people by the government. It never was "conservative" as in "let's conserve the culture and religion" vs. "liberal" as in "let's maximize liberty".
It was always good vs evil. Good people wanted the freedom to do what they believed was best without any oversight or controls. Evil people try to constrain good people from doing good things. It's really that simple.
The very fact that we have to use code words like "conservative" or "liberal" instead of "good" and "evil" is a sign that we are governed by evil people.
Remember, when the communists riot in US cities the riot police face AWAY from the commies. They are looking for good people who might do violence on the commies.
