Imagine boiling processed potato flake snacks when you could just boil actual potatoes for the same cost. At least the appeal of instant mash is that it's slightly cheaper...

Potatoes are easy to grow.

Also you could just buy a 5lb bag for less than $5 and have enough potatoes to make mash potatoes for a whole month

Exactly. 2 tins of party stack are $4.50 ish each? So ... $9 mashed goyslop when spuds are a 10# bag for that amount and you can feed a family of four for a week on that.
