I don't think the issue is so much tax charges as it it government spending allocation. I don't mind spending 50% of my income as long as I at least get that much back in useful services.
In most of these countries with 40%+, the biggest tax bill is pensions/social security (income redistribution) Ponzi scheme, with the second being bureaucracy and civil servant salaries. This will vary country to country, but the trend is there.
The most useful expenses like education, transportation, defense, healthcare typically account for about only 20% of the budget when you look at the breakdown.
