Unfortunately less honorable was the decision to put them there in the first place. Stalingrad was a fuck-up mired in the Sunk Cost Fallacy.

I remember listening to a podcast called 'ghosts of the Ostfront'. This was before I was a noticer, but I was thoroughly depressed by the end of it. I guess deep down I instinctively knew that the good guy lost WW2.
