McGovern didn't crash and burn solely due to Eagleton, Nixon was an exceptionally popular president and McGovern never had a chance to begin with, scapegoating the VP candidate was just a convenience.
The media during his time and ever since has done everything they could to play down Nixon's popularity, but the fact remains that he won the single most one sided election in American history and that was back when the voters were nearly all White too.
