What they supposedly did is beyond comical. It's like bad fiction. If you did that in a movie, it would be too unrealistic.

On the other hand, gulags WERE quite realistic. Literal forced slave labor with eventual death via exhaustion or freezing. Amazing how Russians managed to kill 20-50 million people on a systematic scale in which all the government apparatus worked together like a cogs that fit together.

They got arrest quotas per village/city, they arrested people, they tortured them until they signed a pre-written confession, and were shipped to the labor camp, then they worked HARD until they survived a decade or died prematurely. And in between there was a lot of imprisonment in overcrowded, dirty cells - which is a fine expression of the hatred towards the people held in the cells in the first place. From the very beginning every single thing shouted "you are fucked."

Oh and if that's not enough, sometimes they imprisoned people for ANOTHER decade.

I know ... I've read the archipelago. Here's the fun part, though ... the same people are in still charge of the apparatus today ... and they have more countries than just Russia.
