The whole reason purgatory exists is because even after someone repents of their sins and is forgiven, they still must undergo the rightful punishment for their crimes to cleanse them of the defects that led to those crimes occurring in the first place. One of the greatest errors arising from the denial of purgatory is the subsequent ignoring of the fact that while God may be perfectly Merciful, He is also *perfectly Just*.
