Its because of a century of deliberate warping of our morals and faith into mindless Statism instead of loyalty to God and to Kin. "Render unto Caesar what it Caesar's" means *only what is Caesar's*. The State has no right to demand access to people's children, to disarm them, or to charge them exorbitant taxes exceeding 10%, and yet it gets away with it because "muh consent of the governed", which is nothing more than the bandwagon fallacy applied to the State.
We innately know there is right and wrong, but our faith has been stripped from us, so all that remains is the secular law.
Your ancestors never believed in "muh separation of church and state" - the king/emperor/Pharaoh/Caesar/etc. was seen as upholding the law given by God/the gods and ruling on His/their behalf.
God's position has been usurped, so instead of "right and wrong" we have "legal and illegal" - make something legal and that means it's suddenly OK, and good, and you're bad if you still oppose it.
