The UV-5R is the most capable handheld radio that most people can reasonably afford; sure they're cheaply made and will break easy but that's why you buy 5 of them which can be done for around 100 dollars.

All the good handheld radios that aren't chink-made are outrageously expensive if you can find someone willing to sell them to you without company/agency credentials.

Then recommend a better alternative.
