And for some reason had a massive chip on their shoulder about white colonization, despite having superior weapons and technology to the colonial powers, and also not being colonized.

Because if they didn’t, it would be admitting that the only reason the apes got colonized is because of stupidity and lack of technology. And they can’t do that now can they.
