I believe it's already failed parenting to have the necessity to beat a child for very bad behavior. But it's better to do it than to let that pass.

If I'd have a son and it would randomly spew orange juice on the floor, it can be solved by making him clean it up as I watch and wait. Then I would sit him down and ask him why the fuck he did that. Ultimately his bad behavior reflects on my parenting having failed, and I'd need to find out what the problem is and find a solution.

If it's something severe he himself cannot fix, he has to be punished. I'd still talk with him about the why, but it will take weeks before I forgive him. So if his complaint is a lack of attention, he just fucked up royally. Ultimately though it all falls back on me, I have failed. So I should punish myself as well.
