The costum was that the one who inherits the farm ( this was decided well before the parents die ) has to care for his parents untill they die, and if there are unmarried siblings, they can stay too and help around the farm.
When someone got married and moved out, people in town helped build a house with them. The young men learned by working with adult and elder men.
My grandparent's generation was the last when this was still common, but by the time they were adults most people in town were not farmer anymore.
