That's how the Byzantine Empire did it and that's why they lasted over a thousand years. Also why history classes in modern western nations don't teach much more of Rome than Hannibal, the Julio-Claudians and the fall of the western half.

For us, it was literally 2 years of "muh holocaust" across both "History" and Literature class. Practically nothing about the middle ages other than "muh plague, muh inquisition, muh Catholic Church bad". Similarly next to nothing about the Classical Age.
