I occasionally work with machetes to cut brushes. Half of them are riddled with thorns, and they usually grow up to 2-3 meters high before I start again. I do that for decades already, and what I found is that intent with every swing is crucial.

As you say, when I slash I envision the effects. It is not just a wild flailing to hit the target and eventually cut something. There is an expectation and an intent that is supposed to lead to that, and it *does* happen. When it doesn't, it deviates from the expected.
I saw people use machetes in pathetic ways, chopping some little thing for minutes. For me it's one good slash, ~2 seconds. The guy probably just chopped around. My brother, even though more muscular than me, also sucks in using them.
It is hard to describe, and I don't know if it's common knowledge, but I know the difference intent can make. It allows me to apply force and precision to the degree I deem necessary.
