It's mostly applied to the Chinese. And it's because they tend to act like a mound of fire ants. There's literally billions of them, they all seem to act in compliance with a larger agenda like mound of ants or termites.

I see. I think of Asians as bugmen because they generally have no personality, they are boring, lack creativity, and even though they might be smart or hardworking they are soulless like bugs.
