Cowardice is a better word, but the technical term is "conflict aversion". It's a side effect of low combat power, which is why it's more common in women, and more common in modernity.
If you had to fight a randomly selected male from your country, do you like your odds?
Yes? Then you can meaningfully have an independent opinion.
No? You will subconsciously prefer what you perceive as the common opinion. (Neuro-atypical exceptions.)
If you get swole, some people will agree with you no matter what because they're subconsciously intimidated by you. It's strange to watch.
Passive-aggressive behavior is a symptom of cowardice, weakness. It's duplicitous. Even weak monkeys become duplicitous, it's not just humans.
Look around you. How common is physical discipline and fitness? Even a low bar: How many people couldn't run one non-stop mile and lift 100lb ten times? Is that more, less, or as common as cowardice?
Check for yourself: do weaker people avoid conflict more?
(There's another element at play when they go into "cancel the heretic!" mode.)

I am a big tall guy myself, so yeah, I more fit the profile of someone with higher combat power.
But on the other hand, my podcast co-host is an average height man with low muscle mass.
Many guys in my Catholic Action group are pretty skinny too.
And many Catholic Saints were notorious for being malnourished but bold when it came to proclaiming the truth.
So we will have to agree to disagree here.
thanks for the comment though!
