America is also fucked up, where fathers are getting in legal trouble for even laying a hand on their wife or kids. "Discipline" contains corporal punishment, but good animal trainers know: small pains are more effective at behavioral correction.
Just use your words for regular infractions. Corporal punishment should be reserved for more severe infractions.
That said, the MOST effective punishment is "negative reinforcement": taking away the things they like until they've complied. "Time out until you're ready to apologize to your sister." "You can have xbox back when your room is all clean."
And of course, the best way to control your children is to behave yourself. Kids do a) what you do and b) what you reward. Showering a kid with pleasures and special treatment because he got injured *is literally teaching him to get injured again*. Giving a whining kid what they want is teaching them to whine. And adults are NOT DIFFERENT when it comes to rewards, just in who's their role models.
