Translation from German: "Judaism in music is a very serious problem because it concerns art itself. The Jews, who have no real music of their own, have infiltrated the art world and threaten the purity and essence of German music. They are not capable of creating music from within themselves that reflects the soul of the people, but instead, they imitate and falsify what is original and genuine. The Jew is the born enemy of aesthetic purity; he cannot write poetry, cannot compose, because he has no deep connection with the soil and the people from which true art springs. Jewish music is merely an imitation, and Judaism itself is the death of art because it places the materialistic over the spiritual. The Jews have disfigured art, and their presence in the music world is a sign of decay."
Nietzsche believed Vagner was the perfect example of an ubermensch: strong, smart, gorgeous, dextrous, artistically gifted, and perceptually gifted. Vagner was a hell of a man.
But he didn't approve of Nietzsche's philosophy, so Nietzsche got all butthurt about it.
