Considering how isolating the modern jewwed world is I don't really see a problem with it, assuming it's not to avoid hanging out with family or coping with not having family.
On the other hand I imagine it would be hard to actually make friends (unpaid) through one of these, which kinda dampens it a bit.
I can't really understand the negativity here, he's making money while socialising with new people and introducing them to Japanese culture

Most friendships are based on matters of convenience or mutual benefit
The payment is just symbolic, most of these old blokes just look for something to do with their free time
