I've burned up every single sick day I've ever had. If I have a choice of going to work or staying home and doing whatever I want and getting paid for it, I'm staying home. When I was in high school I learned the sick day policy which is actually similar to corporate sick day policies in many ways. I found out in high school that I could essentially skip one day of school every week for the entire school year with no penalties. Did I double down and study harder? Fuck no, I took the time off like a sane person would.
Years later I find myself working at a fortune 100 company. One night I go out with my buddies and we drink a bit too much. In the morning I wake up and just know it's best I sleep off the hang over. I call in sick. I then get lectured to by my manager that I'm making a habit of using my PTO sick days. Keep in mind corporate sick leave is five days per year. So I burn up a day and my manager is getting on my case about burning up a PTO day that I'm entitled to. Can you imagine that? Getting bitched out for using the benefits you're entitled to.
