Simple. The best way to acquire and protect power is **controlling the distribution of social status**. This is **THE** best way to prevent people from caring about what's actually true - or moral, for that matter.

A moral and honest power structure does not need to control social status in order to maintain itself... but it might as well, because of how useful it is against normie psychology. However, a corrupt and secretive power structure REQUIRES control over social status, because the moment they lose it, the illusion falls and trust in them vanishes.
